School Lab
Interference and Diffraction - an Introduction
maximum of 20 participants
grades 11 and 13: 9 am till 3 pm
This project day offers an introduction into the topics of interference and diffraction. With the help of experiments we will explore and calculate the connection between the wave length, the gap width and the location of the interference maxima.
This forms the theoretic foundation to understand the methods of diffraction, that are used at BESSY II to understand atomic structures. This newly aquired knowledge will find application in various experiments throughout the day. The determination of the groove width of a CD, experiments on spectral glasses and bird feathers as well as on microwave. At last a quiz in which the pupils can verify their answers for themselves will help to wrap up the day.
It is possible to have lunch in the cafeteria.
