Establishment of a stage-gate process and unified workflow for the exploration of novel solar cell technologies
To achieve the ambitious goals of the Helmholtz Association in PV a stage-gate process was conceptualized and established that clearly categorizes different stages of new materials exploration based on technology readiness levels. The development process ranges from the early stage, low Technology Readiness Level (TRL), exploration and identification of novel materials with potential for various functionalities in PV technology, to larger area prototypes tested under realistic/relevant conditions. It covers the assessment of thin-layer samples and evaluation in small-area devices, among other aspects. Defined criteria to advance materials to the next stage of development have been identified based on performance, stability/reliability, scalability/manufacturability and deployability.
The role of the Interface Design Dept. in this endeavour is to develop and exploit advanced analytical methods to study materials, components, and devices at every stage of this process.
