Our Accelerator Research

The operation and ongoing research and development of synchrotron radiation sources is an essential part of the work at HZB. Within the overarching Accelerator Research and Development (ARD) program of six Helmholtz Centers, two Helmholtz Institutes and numerous partners from universities, academia and industry, research is being conducted to gain a deeper understanding of accelerator science.

The Berlin HZB focuses on the User Facilities, the Research Infrastructure and the new topic Data Management and Analysis (DMA). Energy responsibility and sustainability is anchored in all research activities and always taken into account in all new developments.

The high reliability, flexibility, and availability of a comprehensive range of technology and beam test facilities operated by HZB attracts world-leading users, who in turn are instrumental in formulating requirements that guide the implementation of future evolutionary and revolutionary accelerator concepts by our teams.

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)

Metrology Light Source

HZB and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) cooperate to serve the dynamically developing field of metrology with synchrotron radiation. PTB currently holds a leading position worldwide, in particular for EUV metrology for semiconductor production and optical technologies and nanometrology for the development of functional materials in a large number of technological fields. PTB also serves international space agencies with the traceable characterisation of instruments for space-based astronomy and solar physics.
