Department Microstructure and Residual Stress Analysis

Lectures at the TU Berlin

lectures for master's students

Prof. Dr. Christoph Genzel, Dr. Gerhard Schumacher and Dr.-Ing. Rodrigo Coelho hold lectures for master's students of materials science at the TU Berlin.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Genzel holds the lecture "Application of modern X-ray-, synchrotron- and neutron methods in materials science" (Einsatz moderner Röntgen-, Synchrotron- und Neutronenverfahren in der Materialforschung) as part of the module "Characterisation methods – Diffraction" (Untersuchungsverfahren Beugung) in German during the winter semester (WiSe, Di 16:00 - 18:00 Uhr, Raum BH 248).

Dr. Gerhard Schumacher holds the lecture “Materials for high- and ultrahigh-temperature applications” (Werkstoffe für Hoch- und Ultrahochtemperaturanwendungen) in German during the summer semester (SoSe, Do 12:00 - 14:00 Uhr, Raum BH 248).

Dr.-Ing. Rodrigo Coelho holds the lecture "Joining processes" (Fügen metallischer Werkstoffe) in English during the summer semester (SoSe, Mi 10:00 - 12:00 Uhr, Raum BH 248).

The increasing use of light-weight materials for industrial applications is the driving force for the development and improvement of joining techniques. This course aims to give the students an overview of many processes used to bring separate parts or components together in manufacturing industry. The course covers mechanical joining, adhesive bonding and welding technology, addressing its various aspects: principles, processes, security, stresses and distortions, technical standards (terminology) and metallurgy. Some highlight topics of the course are:

  • Introduction to joining processes
  • Mechanical joining (basics, mechanical fastening, integral attachment, joint design)
  • Adhesive bonding (basics, adhesives, cement and mortar)
  • Welding (basics, terminology and symbols)
  • Fusion welding processes (oxy-fuel gas welding, arc welding, resistance welding and high-energy welding)
  • Non-fusion welding processes (friction welding, explosion welding, diffusion welding, brazing and soldering)
  • Physics of welding (energy and flow heat, thermal induced distortion and stresses)
  • Metallurgy of welding (solidification and defects in different weld regions)
  • Welding assessment (non destructive methods, microstructure, mechanical properties and residual stress)
