Optical Design of Beamlines
Before a beamline can be constructed and assembled, the optical design of the beamline must be specified in such a way that it meets the requirements of the scientific experiment. The beamline designer, mostly physicists, is assisted by special optical simulation programs. These programs are able to simulate the beam path from the source via the optical elements of a beam tube, such as mirrors, grids, apertures, etc., to the experiment and predict the properties of the beam, such as flux, energy resolution and focus size at the experiment. The HZB has its own source code projects for this purpose: RAY-UI, REFLEC, PHASE and WAVE. Especially the maintenance of such source codes preserves the special knowledge, which is necessary for the design of X-Ray beam lines and their optics at synchrotron sources.
